West Bloomfield Police report a rise in heroin cases among teenagers. According to official reports, there has been a 300% increase in cases since last year in Oakland County according to the Sheriff. In 2013, undercover NET officers initiated 15 heroin cases and since January 2014, the number has spiked to 55!
According to the Sheriff, kids are working their way up to heroin through the prescription drug gateway. They start with prescriptions, often stolen from parents or others and the supplies run out. They turn to purchasing but the price for prescriptions is high. What is the alternative? Heroin. The problem: way more powerful, way more addictive and way more fatal. In the past two weeks, one-half of the heroin cases in West Bloomfield have been fatalities…ONE-HALF. In one day, there were 16-recorded overdoses in Oakland County alone.
All of this begs the question, what is the role of the criminal defense lawyer in the defense of a client charged with a drug charge? Is it just to get the person out of trouble or out of going to jail or prison? In many cases, that is exactly the role that many defense lawyers see for themselves. At LEWIS & DICKSTEIN, P.L.L.C., we see a different role that we have been using successfully for two decades.
Our strategy in the defense of clients charged in Oakland County and throughout Michigan with various felony and misdemeanor drug offenses is two-fold: (1) Minimize or eliminate the conviction/sentence and (2) help our client to avoid drugs and live a healthier life. Why do we do more than just approach a case with a attitude of getting an acquittal or avoiding jail? We go the extra mile because if we truly care about a client, we will look out for them in the short term and the long term. We have a team of experts with extensive experience who work together to achieve this dual result.
There is a hidden but powerful advantage to our clients because prosecutors and judges know the unique, proactive approach we employ on behalf of our clients. While the clients of other lawyers may get locked up for the “safety of the community,” our clients have a much better chance of being given the opportunity to avoid jail because we have a reputation for helping our clients get healthy and productive. Although most of our clients do not have a drug addiction, courts and prosecutors assume all defendants are addicted and we have the expertise and resources to set the record straight. No one fights for their clients or cares more then the dedicated, fearless and tenacious team at LEWIS & DICKSTEIN, P.L.L.C.
