Know The Polygraph Equipment

The underlying principle of the polygraph is that deceptive answers will produce physiological responses different from those associated with non-deceptive answers. The primary components of modern polygraph equipment include:

A pneumograph measures the subject’s breathing rate and depth. Typically, two pneumograph tubes are placed around the subject’s chest and abdominal area to measure thoracic and abdominal breathing.

The cardio or blood pressure cuff measures the subject’s heart rate and blood pressure. The cuff, similar to the one used during a typical blood pressure test, is placed around the subject’s upper arm.

Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) sensors measure the subject’s electrodermal activity (essentially, the sweat gland activity). Small electrodes are attached to the subject’s palm or fingertips. The machine records the conductance of the skin. When a person is stressed or anxious (which may occur when lying), there can be an increase in sweating, leading to a decrease in the skin’s resistance and an increase in its conductance.

Some polygraph machines include “activity sensors” to detect and record movement. These sensors help examiners determine if the examinee is using physical countermeasures or tactics to try to affect the readings. Usually obtained from internet research, these tricks are not advisable and can lead to a failed test, even if the examinee is truthful.

Computerized Recording System sensors in modern computerized polygraphs record data digitally. This computerized system can graphically display the physiological responses in real time, and examiners can later analyze the data. Some advanced systems also offer software-based analysis tools that suggest points of interest or potential deception, although human interpretation remains vital.

Taking The Exam

The actual police polygraph exam, usually consisting of three (3) to five (5) questions, will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes. I simply cannot recommend him enough. If you think this praise is unwarranted, read on. Despite never so much as having seen a police officer, I was charged with domestic violence. I was notified of this over the phone, at which point I agreed to turn myself in. Later, I came to find out from Loren that I should have turned myself in with him. Anybody in a similar situation, take note. Anyhow, upon retaining Loren from jail, he immediately sprang into action. At my arraignment, the prosecutor made all kinds of egregious, impossible claims. She requested my bond be set at some ludicrous amount--I forget the exact figure, but I believe it was $15,000, no 10%. As if through some incantation, Loren was able to handily overcome this attempt, getting my bond set at $10,000 with 10%. I immediately posted the $1,000 (which was ultimately returned to me), and was out of jail. To my surprise, the frivolous charges were pursued upon my release. I made it clear to Loren that under no condition would I accept a plea bargain of any sort. I wanted to fight, and I wanted to win. He was on board from that moment, and made no attempt to sway my opinion. It was clear that he, too, wanted to win. As the wheels of justice slowly began to turn, I was asked to travel for work. This was a significant problem as one of the conditions of my bond was that I could not leave the state. Having put it off as long as I could, I finally raised the issue with Loren. He told me that, while he could not promise anything, he believed it to be possible. I decided to put my faith in him, and told my client I was working on it. What I expected to take weeks took mere days: in no time at all, I had a signed order permitting travel. That was the first win, and thanks to Loren's swift actions, I was able to advance my career in the midst of such a dreadful ordeal! As the case proceeded, the prosecution began to act in a manner I can only describe as "erratic." At some point, they lost contact with the purported victim. They subpoenaed a man I had never seen or met before. They even attempted to subpoena my elderly mother! Again, Loren acted decisively: not long after, my mother received a phone call from a prosecutor informing her that if she had received the summons, it was not necessary for her to appear. I am quite thankful for that--she was burdened enough by the events. Despite having lost contact with the so-called "victim," the prosecution continued after me! It seemed their plan was to have the police testify on behalf of the "victim!" Outrageous! But once again, Loren intervened. He filed a motion invoking the Crawford rule. When I discussed it with him, he said that while he could not guarantee success, he had never had the motion fail. Lo and behold, it did not! And with that, the police were no longer able to testify on behalf of the "victim." Another win! Are you seeing the pattern here? The prosecution persisted, setting a date for trial! I was informed by the judge that, should I proceed, I would have no further opportunities to enter a plea bargain. In other words, I had a choice: give up, or once again put my faith in Loren, and continue fighting. When I discussed the matter with Loren, he informed me that, should the "victim" not appear at the trial, that would be it: case dismissed. I opted to continue the fight. The day of the trial, I was terrified. But the "victim" never arrived, and as quickly as the ordeal had begun, it was over: case dismissed, and I walked out of the courthouse with the matter resolved--a free man, no probation, nothing about the matter on my record, and, above all else, a mother undisturbed. Later that day, Loren also informed he was waiving the remaining balance. Such generosity is greatly appreciated. I've hit the max length for a review, but that's it. I contacted Lewis & Dickstein after receiving a letter informing me that I needed to turn myself in for a High BAC OWI that occurred in Bloomfield. Since this was the first time I had ever been in trouble with the law, I was extremely nervous and unsure of what to expect. Shortly after contacting the office, Attorney Monarrez called me personally. From the first time I stepped into his office, I felt that I was in good hands, although I was still very concerned because of the seriousness of my case. Attorney Monarrez immediately got to work. He arranged a walk in arraignment, and I was released on a personal bond. After getting Loren ans our lawyer, he made us feel comfortable and helped get my husband evaluated and treatment. He needed help for a terrible pornography addiction. This was an awful case and a terrible twist in our lives! No matter how bad things got or seemed to get, Loren saw us through the whole way and always made us feel comfortable and confident we would get the best outcome. At sentencing, he did a masterful job of convincing the judge to order a sentence that was only a third of what the US attorney was asking for.
