Jail Definition

A facility where people charged with or convicted of a crime are detained. Anyone unable to post a bond while awaiting trial is detained in jail. If someone is convicted of a misdemeanor, they face up to 1 year in jail. A person convicted of a minor felony might be sentenced to a term of probation, jail (up to one year), or prison. Although jails are required to provide necessary medical care, they are notorious for poor medical treatment and mental health services.
