Probation Definition

A period of court supervision granted at sentencing as an alternative to or in combination with incarceration in felony and misdemeanor cases. Probation can be reporting or nonreporting. A defendant placed on probation is assigned to a probation officer who ensures the defendant is complying with court orders.
